Hip Injections
Greater Throchanteric Bursa Injection
-
Obtain and document, at least, verbal consent for procedure

Have the patient side-lying with the affected hip up and slightly flexed
-
Palpate the greater trochanter, and determine the most tender point
-
Mark with a surgical skin marker
-
Apply gloves
-
Apply topical antibacterial x 3
-
Apply analgesic, if desired (I use ethyl chloride)
-
Slowly and controlled, insert needle (22 gauge, spinal needle if necessary), through the marked entry point, and advance to the bone
-
Pull needle tip back just slightly
-
Inject slowly
-
Withdraw needle
10. Wipe clean
11. Apply bandage
