
Ankle and Foot Injections
Intra-Articular Ankle Injection

Obtain and document, at least, verbal consent for procedure

Have patient seated on the table with the legs relaxed and dangling or supine with the feet off the end of the table

Palpate the pertinent ankle landmarks, specifically, the anterior tibialis tendon, medial malleolus, and the joint space between the two
-
Mark this spot with a surgical skin marker

Apply gloves
-
Apply topical antiseptic x 3 at the injection site

Apply analgesic, if desired (I use ethyl chloride)

Slowly and controlled, insert needle (i use a 1.5 inch 25 gauge) through the marked entry point anterior to posterior aiming toward the center of the ankle
-
Inject slowly
-
Withdraw needle
10. Wipe clean
11. Apply bandage
Plantar Fasciitis Injection
-
Obtain and document, at least, verbal consent for procedure
-
Have the patient prone on the exam table with feet off of the end
-
Palpate the pertinent landmarks, specifically the proximal plantar fascia and its insertion on the plantar calcaneus
-
Mark with a surgical skin marker
-
Apply gloves
-
Apply topical antiseptic x 3 at the injection site
-
Apply analgesic, if desired (I use ethyl chloride)

Slowly and controlled, insert needle, through the marked entry point, until it touches the bone
-
Pull the needle tip back just slightly
-
Inject slowly
-
Withdraw needle
10. Wipe clean
11. Apply bandage
